Summary

Hormone therapy, including estrogens and progestogens, has evolved significantly since the late 1800s to effectively treat menopausal symptoms. Modern hormonal drugs are highly effective for managing climacteric symptoms and preventing osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease.

The dawn of hormone replacement therapy.

Maturitas·1991

Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Pharmacology
  • Women's Health

Background:

  • Therapeutic trials for menopausal symptoms began in 1896, predating knowledge of ovarian endocrine function and estrogen discovery.
  • Early treatments involved ovarian extracts and tissue implantation, with oral hormonal drugs emerging in the 1940s.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To provide a historical overview of the development of hormonal therapies for climacteric and post-climacteric symptoms.
  • To highlight the evolution of hormone treatments from early ovarian tissue administration to modern estrogen and progestogen therapies.

Main Methods:

  • Historical review of therapeutic approaches for menopausal symptoms.
  • Analysis of the development timeline for hormonal drugs, including oral formulations.
  • Examination of the efficacy and acceptance of hormone replacement therapy over time.

Main Results:

  • Hormonal treatments for climacteric symptoms have become highly effective and common practice.
  • Estrogens and progestogens are valuable for prophylaxis of post-climacteric osteoporosis and cardiovascular diseases.
  • Androgenic-anabolic steroids and related compounds have expanded therapeutic options for osteoporosis.

Conclusions:

  • Modern hormonal therapies, including estrogens and progestogens, are well-established and effective for managing menopausal symptoms.
  • These therapies play a crucial role in the prophylaxis of post-climacteric osteoporosis and cardiovascular diseases.
  • Ongoing research has led to safe, effective, and versatile hormonal drug formulations.
