Background:

Augmented communicators often face challenges in communication performance.
Existing models like the Comprehension Model and Interaction Model attempt to explain AAC effectiveness.
The optimal speech output method for augmented communicators requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

To compare the effectiveness of a Comprehension Model versus an Interaction Model in explaining augmented communicator performance.
To evaluate the impact of different speech output methods (Word Method vs. Mixed Method) on communication efficiency.
To explore the role of communication co-construction in augmented interaction.

Main Methods:

Five dyads of adults without disabilities participated.
One participant per dyad used an augmentative communication device.
Participants completed ten direction-giving tasks using either Word Method (spoken words) or Mixed Method (spoken words and letters) output.

Main Results:

The Mixed Method speech output demonstrated an advantage in overall completion time and communication rate across most tasks.
Results provided support for the Interaction Model of augmented communication.
Communication co-construction was observed as a significant factor in augmented interaction.

Conclusions:

The Interaction Model better accounts for augmented communication performance than the Comprehension Model.
Mixed Method output enhances communication efficiency for augmented communicators.
Findings have implications for designing future communication devices that support co-construction.
