Formation of the Platelet Plug

The platelet phase, the second stage of hemostasis, commences around 15-20 seconds after an injury. It follows and overlaps with the vascular phase, during which blood vessels constrict to minimize blood loss.

Background:

  • The Amplatzer Vascular Plug (AVP) is a self-expanding nitinol wire mesh device.
  • It is derived from the Amplatz septal occluder.
  • The AVP is designed for vascular embolization.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the results of vascular embolization using the AVP.
  • Evaluate the safety and efficacy of the AVP device.
  • Determine the suitability of AVP in various clinical settings.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 23 consecutive cases.
  • AVP selected with diameter 30-50% larger than target vessel.
  • Device delivered via guide catheter; release upon satisfactory positioning.

Main Results:

  • Successful occlusion of all target vessels.
  • No device malpositioning or malfunction reported.
  • AVP used as sole embolic material in 61% of cases; complete thrombosis up to 15 minutes in high-flow scenarios.
