Background:

Botulinum toxin (BTX) is derived from Clostridium botulinum.
BTX functions by cleaving Soluble N-ethylmaleimide-sensitive factor-Attachment protein REceptor (SNARE) proteins.
This cleavage leads to the chemodenervation of cholinergic neurons.

Discussion:

BTX inhibits the exocytosis of various neurotransmitters, including norepinephrine, glutamate, substance P, and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP).
It also affects the expression of the vanilloid receptor.
The clinical applications of BTX have grown significantly since its initial use for strabismus.

Key Insights:
