We developed a new algorithm, energy-directed tree search (EDTS), to efficiently find the lowest energy structures of molecules. This method significantly reduces computational cost compared to traditional searches, enabling accurate thermochemistry studies for complex chemical systems.
Area of Science:
- Computational Chemistry
- Molecular Modeling
- Chemical Physics
Background:
- Exploring molecular conformations is crucial for understanding chemical properties and reactivity.
- Accurate determination of global minimum energy structures is computationally demanding for large molecules.
- Existing methods often require extensive computational resources, limiting their applicability.
Purpose of the Study:
- To introduce a novel, efficient algorithm for conformational space exploration.
- To enable reliable identification of global minimum energy structures for large and complex molecules.
- To reduce the computational cost of conformational searches, facilitating accurate thermochemistry studies.
Main Methods:
- Developed the energy-directed tree search (EDTS) algorithm.
- Inspired by the build-up approach, applied to the whole molecule.
- Utilizes a learning process to objectively determine optimal torsional angle combinations.
- Tested on 22 diverse molecular systems, including various functional groups and species types.
Main Results:
- Successfully located the global minimum energy structure for most tested molecules.
- For remaining species, EDTS found conformations within chemical accuracy (4 kJ mol(-1)) of the global minimum.
- The EDTS algorithm exhibits a computational cost scaling of 2(N) compared to 3(N) for systematic searches (N = rotatable bonds).
Conclusions:
- EDTS provides a computationally efficient and reliable method for conformational analysis.
- The algorithm extends the scope of molecules for which accurate thermochemistry can be studied.
- EDTS represents a significant advancement in molecular modeling for complex chemical systems.
