Summary

The triangulating stapling technique for colocolonic anastomosis shows a significantly lower leakage rate compared to hand-sewn methods. This stapling method is a cost-effective and attractive alternative for colonic surgery.

  • Demographic and clinical characteristics were analyzed for comparability.
  • Main Results:

    • Anastomotic leakage was significantly lower with triangulating stapling (0.6%) compared to hand-sewn (3.0%) and functional end-to-end (2.8%) (P < 0.05).
    • No significant differences in bleeding, stenosis, or wound infection rates were observed.
    • One death due to anastomotic failure occurred in both functional end-to-end and triangulating stapling groups.
    • Triangulating stapling offered a cost saving of approximately Yen 36,000 per procedure compared to functional end-to-end.

    Conclusions:

    • The triangulating stapling technique is a safe and effective method for colocolonic anastomosis.
    • It presents a lower risk of anastomotic leakage compared to hand-sewn techniques.
    • This stapling method is a viable and attractive alternative for colonic surgery.
