Background:

Task-switching paradigms reveal interactions between task repetition and response category repetition.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate how the interaction between task switching and response category repetition is influenced by the type and number of response categories.
To determine if different types of response categories (spatial vs. finger-type) affect this interaction and if their effects are independent.

Main Methods:

A dual-task number-categorization experiment was conducted.
Participants responded to two tasks (T(1) and T(2)) using specific fingers.
Two groups were induced to use either spatial or finger-type response categories.

Main Results:

The interaction between task switching and response category repetition was significantly related to the induced response categories.
Spatial categories influenced response selection in the finger-type group, indicating additive effects.
Multiple response codes can be simultaneously involved in response selection, with differential performance impacts.

Conclusions:

The type of induced response categories modulates the effects of category repetition during task switching.
Response selection can involve multiple, additively interacting response codes.
