National Nursing Organizations II

Nursing organizations play a vital role in representing nurses working in specialized clinical settings, such as the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN).
The AACN emphasizes a healthy work environment through six standards to achieve an optimal patient outcome. The standards are appropriate staffing, meaningful recognition, collaboration, authentic leadership, effective communication, and decision-making. In addition, AACN provides certification programs, webinars, journals, and...

Nursing Evaluation01:15

Nursing Evaluation

The evaluation stage signals the end of the nursing process. The nurse gathers evaluative data to assess whether or not the patient has attained the expected results. Whereas the nurse collects data in the nursing assessment to identify the patient's health concerns, the evaluation stage data determines if the indicated health issues are resolved. Evaluative data collection includes two sections: the data acquired to evaluate patient outcomes and the time criteria for data collection.
Section...

Nursing Process for Patient and Caregiver Teaching I: Assessment and Diagnosis

The nursing process provides a clinical decision-making framework for patients and families to establish and implement a personalized care plan. Since part of the nurse's duties is to teach patients, the steps of the nursing process are the most effective way to approach instruction. The nursing process and the teaching-learning process are inextricably linked.
It is critical to determine the patient's learning needs during the assessment. Determination of learning needs compounds data from the...

Current Trends in Nursing II

Trends in nursing are multifactorial and associated with changes in society, within the nursing profession, and in other professions. Notably, telehealth and remote nursing contribute to successful healthcare delivery for numerous patients and help reduce stress for nurses due to nursing shortages. Nurses can reach patients, monitor their conditions, and interact with them using computers, audio, visual accessories, and telephones—for example, remote patient monitoring systems. Likewise,...
Nursing Assessment01:29

Nursing Assessment

The two sources for collecting information are primary and secondary. After gathering information, interpretation and validation help to complete the data. The purpose of assessment is to establish data with the initial information, to interpret data about the patient's perceived needs and health problems, and to respond to these problems identified.
The nurse collects all aspects of the patient's health in the initial assessment, establishing priorities for ongoing focused assessments and...

Area of Science:

  • Nursing Education
  • Academic Performance

Background:

  • Baccalaureate nursing programs face pressure to increase graduates due to future workforce demands.
  • Larger student cohorts in nursing schools present challenges in early academic achievement and retention.
  • Traditional predictors like scholastic aptitude may not effectively identify students at risk of academic failure in nursing.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if scholastic aptitude and nursing aptitude predict early academic achievement in baccalaureate nursing programs.
  • To identify reliable predictors for early academic success among nursing students.

Main Methods:

  • Exploratory descriptive research design.
  • Data collected from 164 sophomore nursing students.
  • Analysis of scholastic aptitude and nursing aptitude test scores in relation to academic achievement.

Main Results:

  • Scholastic aptitude and nursing aptitude combined predicted 20.2% of the variance in early academic achievement.
  • Scholastic aptitude alone accounted for 15.4% of the variance in early academic achievement.

Conclusions:

  • Both scholastic and nursing aptitude are significant predictors of early academic achievement in nursing programs.
  • These findings can inform strategies for student selection and support to enhance retention and meet workforce needs.
