Computed tomography (CT) can identify taxane-related colitis in breast cancer patients. While not specific, CT findings, when correlated with clinical data, aid in diagnosing this chemotherapy complication.
Area of Science:
- Oncology
- Radiology
- Gastroenterology
Background:
- Taxane-based chemotherapy is associated with ischemic colitis, a serious complication in breast cancer patients.
- Ischemic colitis in this context has been recently recognized as a distinct clinical entity.
- This condition can lead to significant morbidity and mortality.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate computed tomography (CT) findings in patients with taxane-related colitis.
- To determine the clinical relevance and diagnostic utility of CT in identifying this condition.
- To correlate CT findings with clinical, pathological, and endoscopic data.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective review of CT scans from 41 patients at risk for taxane colitis.
- Analysis of bowel and peritoneal abnormalities on CT scans.
- Correlation of morphological CT findings with clinical, pathological, and endoscopic data.
Main Results:
- CT scans revealed definite colonic abnormalities in 10 out of 41 patients.
- Abnormalities included thickened colonic walls and fluid distension, suggestive of colitis.
- These CT findings were considered within the appropriate clinical context.
Conclusions:
- CT findings in taxane-related colitis are not pathognomonic but can be suggestive of the diagnosis.
- In the context of taxane chemotherapy, CT findings can aid in diagnosis and patient management.
- Radiographic evidence, when combined with clinical information, is valuable for managing taxane-induced colitis.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease I: Ulcerative Colitis
Inflammatory bowel disease, or IBD, encompasses a group of disorders characterized by chronic inflammation or ulceration of the gastrointestinal tract.
Risk Factors
The exact cause of IBD remains unclear, although it is believed to be due to a mix of genetic, environmental, microbial, and immune factors. Genetic factors are significant in determining susceptibility to IBD, with family history being a critical risk factor. Individuals with a first-degree relative who has IBD are at...

Radionuclide Testing
Radionuclide testing is a sophisticated medical technique for assessing gastrointestinal motility. It focuses on gastric emptying and colonic transit time. Radioactive markers track the movement of food through the digestive system, providing insights into gastrointestinal disorders.

Pulmonary Angiogram
A Pulmonary Angiogram is an invasive procedure involving injecting a contrast medium through a catheter threaded into the pulmonary artery or the right side of the heart to visualize the pulmonary vasculature. Computed Tomography (CT) scans have mainly replaced this...
