Background:

Graduate medical education now includes Systems-Based Practice (SBP) competency.
There is a need for novel teaching methods for SBP.

Purpose of the Study:

To design and implement an SBP rotation.
Focus on patient care, clinical revenue, and physician roles within health care systems.

Main Methods:

A 5-day experiential learning rotation through 26 areas of the clinical revenue cycle.
Utilized a
Systems Survivor
theme for experiential learning.
Assessment included a system knowledge test and course evaluations.

Main Results:

25 residents from 4 departments participated.
A 14.8% increase in knowledge scores (p
High program evaluations were received.

Conclusions:

"Systems Survivor" offers an innovative approach to exploring complex health care systems.
The curriculum is effective in enhancing resident knowledge of SBP.
