A nursing summer institute improved Native American high school students' knowledge and opinions about nursing. Culturally, students felt nursing would allow them to be important to their tribe.

Native American high school students interested in nursing are underrepresented in research.
A gap exists in understanding the impact of targeted interventions on this demographic.
Culturally relevant motivations for pursuing nursing careers are not well-documented.

Purpose of the Study:

To assess the impact of a residential summer nursing institute on Native American high school students' knowledge and perceptions of nursing.
To explore culturally specific reasons influencing career choices in nursing among this population.
To evaluate a pretest-posttest survey instrument for measuring changes in knowledge and opinions.

A pilot study involving 17 Native American high school students from nine Northwest tribes.

Administration of a 66-item investigator-constructed pretest-posttest survey (Likert scale and dichotomous items).

Reliability estimates (Cronbach's alpha) for the survey were 0.72 (pretest) and 0.85 (posttest).

Conclusions:

The nursing education intervention demonstrated effectiveness in enhancing knowledge and opinions among Native American high school students.
The study provides initial evidence supporting the use of this intervention and the developed survey instrument.
Culturally relevant factors play a significant role in the career aspirations of Native American students toward nursing.
