  • Tensor-based morphometry was employed to analyze longitudinal white matter changes over a 2-3 year follow-up period.
  • Main Results:

    • Patients with first-episode schizophrenia displayed white matter volume deficits in frontal and temporal lobes at baseline.
    • Increased white matter volume was observed in the frontoparietal junction bilaterally in patients.
    • Schizophrenia patients showed significantly greater white matter loss in temporal regions over the follow-up period compared to controls.

    Conclusions:

    • White matter abnormalities are present at the initial symptomatic presentation of schizophrenia.
    • These abnormalities undergo further degeneration in the early years of the illness.
    • Progressive white matter degeneration may underlie the neural connectivity deficits associated with schizophrenia.
