Fractures: Bone Repair01:27

Fractures: Bone Repair

Treatment for a fracture is based on the type of break, the bone affected, and the patient's age.
Minor fractures with no bone displacement are treated by immobilizing the fractured bone using a cast or splint. However, in the case of fractures with displaced bones, the broken bones are repositioned before immobilization to ensure successful healing without deformation and loss of function. The realignment of fractured bone ends is performed through a process called reduction. If the procedure...
Conduct Disorder01:28

Conduct Disorder

Conduct disorder is a complex mental health diagnosis characterized by a repetitive and persistent pattern of behavior that violates societal norms, the rights of others, or age-appropriate rules. The diagnostic criteria for conduct disorder require the presence of at least three problematic behaviors within the past 12 months, with at least one occurring in the past six months. These behaviors are grouped into four categories: aggression toward people and animals; destruction of property;...
Flail Chest-I01:24

Flail Chest-I

Overview of Flail Chest
Flail chest is a severe and potentially life-threatening condition characterized by the fracture of three or more adjacent ribs in multiple places. It is most commonly caused by direct impacts and trauma, such as motor vehicle accidents or injuries from a steering wheel impact. It can also occur due to falls in elderly individuals with osteoporosis, or assaults involving sharp objects.
Pathophysiology
The pathophysiology of flail chest is complex, involving fractures of...
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder01:30

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. It affects approximately 5-8% of children globally, with around 60-70% of cases persisting into adulthood. ADHD has significant implications for educational attainment, social interactions, and occupational success.
Diagnostic Criteria and Symptoms
To diagnose ADHD, symptoms must manifest before age 12 and be evident across multiple settings.
Flail Chest-II01:26

Flail Chest-II

Managing flail chest, a condition characterized by a segment of the chest wall moving independently from the rest of the thoracic cage, requires a comprehensive approach. It includes a thorough assessment of the patient's condition, a diagnostic evaluation to determine the extent of the injury, and the implementation of appropriate medical interventions tailored to the individual's needs.

Borderline Personality Disorder01:25

Borderline Personality Disorder

Borderline Personality Disorder is a complex and multifaceted mental health condition characterized by pervasive instability in interpersonal relationships, self-image, emotions, and impulse control. This instability manifests in extreme emotional reactions, fear of abandonment, and self-destructive behaviors. The disorder significantly impacts daily functioning, often leading to distress in both personal and professional domains.

Summary

Children with extremity fractures occurring during solitary activities, requiring open reduction, or involving lower extremities showed higher impulsive/hyperactive behaviors. Early detection of behavioral issues in pediatric fracture patients is crucial for preventing future injuries.

Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Orthopedics
  • Child Psychology
  • Behavioral Science

Background:

  • Extremity fractures are common in children.
  • Impulsive/hyperactive behavior is a recognized concern in pediatric populations.
  • The relationship between fracture characteristics and behavior requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify specific fracture characteristics associated with impulsive/hyperactive behavior in children.
  • To inform clinical practice regarding behavioral assessment in pediatric fracture cases.

Main Methods:

  • A clinical sample of 95 children with extremity fractures was assessed.
  • The Conners Parent Rating Scale (CPRS) measured impulsivity/hyperactivity.
  • Fracture characteristics included trauma type, localization, severity, and treatment.

Main Results:

  • Children with fractures from solitary activities exhibited higher impulsivity/hyperactivity than those from group activities.
  • Fractures requiring open reduction were associated with increased impulsive/hyperactive behavior.
  • Lower extremity fractures showed a stronger association with impulsive/hyperactive behavior compared to upper extremity fractures.

Conclusions:

  • Specific fracture characteristics correlate with heightened impulsive/hyperactive behavior in children.
  • Identifying behavioral problems in children with fractures is essential for intervention.
  • Prompt referral for behavioral treatment can aid in preventing subsequent serious injuries.
