Background:

  • Macular holes are a common cause of vision loss.
  • Traditional surgical repair often necessitates prolonged postoperative face-down positioning, which can be burdensome for patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of pars plana vitrectomy with internal limiting membrane (ILM) peeling and C3F8 gas tamponade for macular hole repair.
  • To determine if this surgical approach can avoid the need for postoperative face-down posturing.

Main Methods:

  • A consecutive series of 24 eyes underwent pars plana vitrectomy with indocyanine green-assisted ILM peeling and C3F8 gas tamponade.
  • No face-down posturing was required postoperatively.
  • Patients were followed for 3 months, with assessments including optical coherence tomography (OCT) for macular hole closure and Snellen visual acuity.

Main Results:

  • The overall macular hole closure rate was 91.6% (22 out of 24 eyes) at 3 months.
