Summary
The Submerged Arc Nanoparticle Synthesis System (SANSS) fabricated titanium dioxide (TiO2) catalyst efficiently decomposes volatile organic compounds (VOCs). SANSS TiO2 demonstrated superior performance in photodecomposition of gaseous toluene compared to Degussa-P25 TiO2.
Area of Science:
- Materials Science
- Environmental Chemistry
- Nanotechnology
Background:
- Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) pose environmental and health risks.
- Photocatalytic degradation using titanium dioxide (TiO2) is a promising method for VOC removal.
- Efficient synthesis of highly active TiO2 nanoparticles is crucial for enhanced performance.
Purpose of the Study:
- To synthesize TiO2 nanoparticles using the Submerged Arc Nanoparticle Synthesis System (SANSS).
- To evaluate the photocatalytic efficiency of SANSS-fabricated TiO2 for volatile organic compound (VOC) decomposition.
- To compare the performance of SANSS TiO2 with commercial Degussa-P25 TiO2.
Main Methods:
- TiO2 nanoparticles were synthesized via electric discharge of a titanium bar in deionized water.
- Nanoparticle characterization included X-ray diffraction (XRD) and particle size analysis.
- Photodecomposition efficiency was assessed by exposing gaseous toluene to UV irradiation in the presence of different TiO2 catalysts.
Main Results:
- SANSS successfully produced anatase TiO2 nanoparticles with an average diameter of 20 nm.
- Gaseous toluene photodecomposition yielded recalcitrant intermediates.
- SANSS TiO2 reduced toluene concentration to 0.35% in 60 min, significantly outperforming Degussa-P25 TiO2 (8.18% remaining).
Conclusions:
- TiO2 synthesized by SANSS exhibits superior photocatalytic activity for gaseous toluene decomposition.
- The enhanced efficiency is attributed to strong chemical debonding energy induced by UV irradiation.
- SANSS offers a viable method for producing highly effective TiO2 catalysts for environmental remediation.
