Healthcare Agencies I

Healthcare agencies provide healthcare services to people. In the United States, voluntary agencies are often non-profit centers sponsored by donations, grants, or fundraisers. One such organization is Meals on Wheels, which provides meals to the elderly and homebound. The American Heart Association and the American Lung Association are other non-profit community organizations. Doctors and nurses are frequently active members of these organizations, which offer health checks and educational...

Relationship Formation

What do you think is the single most influential factor in determining with whom you become friends and whom you form romantic relationships? You might be surprised to learn that the answer is simple: the people with whom you have the most contact. This most important factor is proximity. You are more likely to be friends with people you have regular contact with. For example, there are decades of research that shows that you are more likely to become friends with people who live in your dorm,...

Area of Science:

  • Addiction Medicine
  • Social Psychology
  • Behavioral Health

Background:

  • Social networks significantly influence alcohol dependence and recovery.
  • Existing treatments often overlook the impact of social support systems on sobriety.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess if a socially focused intervention can modify social networks to reinforce sobriety.
  • To determine if changes in social support networks correlate with reduced alcohol consumption.

Main Methods:

  • Randomly assigned 210 alcohol-dependent adults to network support (NS), network support + contingency management (NS + CM), or case management (CaseM).
  • Analyzed drinking rates and social network variables at 15-month follow-up.

Main Results:

  • Both NS conditions showed significantly better drinking outcomes than CaseM.
  • NS interventions increased behavioral and attitudinal support for abstinence and Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) involvement.
  • Social network changes and AA involvement positively correlated with improved drinking outcomes.

Conclusions:

  • Socially focused treatments can effectively alter social networks to support abstinence.
  • Modifying social support structures is a viable strategy for improving alcohol dependence treatment outcomes.
