    Area of Science:

    • Cellular pathology
    • Electron microscopy
    • Glandular tissue research

    Background:

    • Glomiform inclusions (tubular arrays in endoplasmic reticulum) are rare cellular structures.
    • Their presence has been noted in various pathological conditions.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To describe the ultrastructural morphology of glomiform inclusions.
    • To investigate the occurrence of these inclusions in specific disease states and in a canine subject.

    Main Methods:

    • Transmission electron microscopy was used to examine cellular inclusions.
    • Histopathological analysis of glandular tissues from human patients and a dog.

    Main Results:

    • Glomiform inclusions, interpreted as contorted tubules of endoplasmic reticulum, were identified in epithelial cells of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus and Reye's syndrome, and in a dog.
    • Fibrillar inclusions, presumed to be altered zymogen granules, were found in pancreatic acinar cells of two patients.

    Conclusions:

    • Glomiform inclusions represent a specific ultrastructural alteration of the endoplasmic reticulum.
    • Fibrillar inclusions in pancreatic acinar cells may indicate a distinct pathological process involving zymogen granules.
