Skin Cancer

Skin cancer is a type of cancer that occurs when there is an abnormal growth of skin cells, usually triggered by damage to the DNA within the skin cells. It is primarily caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or artificial sources like tanning beds. Summary

Patients detected fewer second primary melanomas (SPMs) than first primary melanomas (FPMs). Regular clinical review is important for melanoma detection, as patient self-surveillance is not always effective for new melanomas.

Background:

  • Limited research exists on the effectiveness of patient follow-up and self-surveillance in detecting second primary melanomas (SPMs).
  • Understanding the role of patient detection in identifying both initial and subsequent melanomas is crucial for improving early diagnosis and patient outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the frequency of patient detection for first primary melanomas (FPMs) and second primary melanomas (SPMs).
  • To identify factors associated with patient- versus clinician-detected melanomas.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 112 patients with a recent SPM diagnosis was interviewed.
  • Multivariate analysis was used to examine associations between clinical/pathological factors and who detected the FPM and SPM.

Main Results:

  • Patients detected 59% of FPMs compared to 46% of SPMs.
  • Predictors for patient-detected FPMs included female gender, thicker tumors, and younger age.
  • Predictors for patient-detected SPMs included thicker tumors and lesion visibility.

Conclusions:

  • A prior melanoma diagnosis does not enhance a patient's ability to self-detect new or thinner melanomas.
  • Regular clinical surveillance by healthcare professionals is vital for the effective detection of new melanomas.
