Summary

An outreach visit intervention significantly improved the timely completion of essential diabetes care procedures for general practitioners (GPs) in Reunion. This academic detailing enhanced patient management and adherence to clinical guidelines.

Data collected retrospectively on 6 procedures (HbA1c, foot exam, fundoscopy, ECG, creatinine clearance, micro-albuminuria) over 18 months.

Main Results:

42 GPs in the intervention group (IG) and 40 in the control group (CG) participated.
No significant differences in patient demographics between groups.
The IG showed significant improvement in 4-6 procedures post-intervention: foot examination, fundoscopy, creatinine clearance, and micro-albuminuria.

Conclusions:

Outreach visits (academic detailing) are effective in improving timely performance of diabetes surveillance procedures.
The intervention demonstrates short-term benefits in enhancing diabetes care management.
This strategy can help align GP practices with clinical recommendations for type 2 diabetes.
