Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Dermatology
  • Equine Pathology

Background:

  • Erythema multiforme is a rare mucocutaneous condition.
  • First report of erythema multiforme in South African horses.

Observation:

  • Two horses presented with sudden, severe outbreaks of raised, non-pruritic plaques.
  • Lesions were symmetrically distributed on the neck and trunk.
  • No alopecia was observed.

Findings:

  • Histopathology revealed hydropic degeneration of basal epidermal cells and keratinocyte necrosis.
  • Intra-epidermal and sub-epidermal clefts were observed.
  • Dermal perivascular infiltrates were present.

Implications:

  • This study documents a novel occurrence of erythema multiforme in equine populations in South Africa.
