Summary

Basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) enema shows promise for treating inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). This study found bFGF significantly improved clinical and histological scores in a rat colitis model, suggesting it as a safe and effective novel therapy.

Mechanistic Insight into the Development of TNBS-Mediated Intestinal Fibrosis and Evaluating the Inhibitory Effects of Rapamycin

  • Clinical scores (stool consistency, weight loss, rectal bleeding), colon length, and histological injury scores were analyzed.
  • Main Results:

    • bFGF enema administration significantly reduced clinical scores (p < 0.01).
    • Histological scores of mucosal injury were also significantly improved by bFGF treatment (p < 0.01).
    • No adverse side effects were observed with bFGF administration.

    Conclusions:

    • Intracolonic bFGF enema is clinically safe and effective for treating inflammatory bowel disease.
    • bFGF enema represents a potential novel therapeutic approach for IBD.
    • Further research into bFGF as an IBD therapy is warranted.
