Galvanometer01:24

Galvanometer

Common devices, including car instrument panels, battery chargers, and inexpensive electrical instruments, measure potential difference (voltage), current, or resistance using a d'Arsonval galvanometer. This electromechanical instrument is also known as a moving coil galvanometer.
The galvanometer consists of  two concave-shaped permanent magnets, providing a uniform radial magnetic field in the annular region. In the center, a pivoted coil of fine copper wire is placed in the uniform magnetic...

    Summary

Iron was detected on the Moon

    Area of Science:

    • Lunar geology
    • Space exploration

    Background:

    • The Surveyor V mission aimed to analyze the lunar surface composition.
    • A permanent magnet was used to interact with lunar regolith during landing.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To determine the presence and form of iron on the lunar surface.
    • To compare lunar material properties with terrestrial samples.

    Main Methods:

    • Analyzing images of lunar material adhering to a permanent magnet on the Surveyor V footpad.
    • Conducting laboratory experiments with terrestrial rocks and varying amounts of added iron powder.
    • Comparing visual data from the Moon with simulated terrestrial conditions.

    Main Results:

    • Lunar surface material was attracted to the magnet, indicating the presence of ferromagnetic elements.

  • The amount of lunar material attracted suggests a low concentration of free iron.
  • The interaction patterns most closely resembled terrestrial basalt without added iron.
  • Conclusions:

    • Iron is present on the lunar surface in a form attracted to a 500-gauss magnet.
    • The concentration of free iron on the lunar surface is limited, likely less than 1% by volume.
    • The lunar soil composition is similar to terrestrial plateau basalt with minimal free iron.
