Summary

This study found that ulcerative colitis patients are less likely to smoke but more likely to experience milk-induced symptoms. Most other lifestyle factors showed no significant difference compared to the general population.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate socioeconomic factors, dietary habits, personal habits, and medical history as potential risk factors for ulcerative colitis.
  • To compare these factors between prevalent cases of ulcerative colitis and matched population controls.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study design was employed.
  • 167 prevalent cases of ulcerative colitis diagnosed between 1945 and 1964 in Uppsala county were identified.
  • 167 age- and sex-matched population controls were selected for comparison.

Main Results:

  • Ulcerative colitis patients demonstrated a significantly lower likelihood of current smoking (odds ratio = 0.44).
  • Patients were more likely to report symptoms induced by milk consumption (odds ratio = 4.63).
  • No significant differences were observed in most socioeconomic, dietary, or personal habits between UC patients and controls.

Conclusions:

  • Smoking may be a protective factor against ulcerative colitis.
  • Milk consumption appears to be a potential trigger for symptoms in ulcerative colitis patients.
  • Further research is warranted to elucidate the complex etiology of ulcerative colitis.
