Summary

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate how a sudden color change influences the remembered timing of another transient visual event.
  • To differentiate the effects of predictable versus unpredictable visual changes on temporal memory.

Main Methods:

  • Participants observed a disk in circular motion, with a visual flash occurring at random intervals.
  • The disk's color changed either randomly (unpredictable), at a fixed time (predictable), or not at all (no-change).
  • Subjects reported the perceived timing of the visual flash relative to the motion and color change.

Main Results:

  • Temporal memory of the visual flash was accurate in the no-change and predictable color-change conditions.
  • In the unpredictable color-change condition, flashes were perceived as occurring closer to the color change than their actual timing.

Conclusions:

  • Unpredictable visual events significantly distort temporal memory.
