Summary

This study reports the first case of sinonasal plasmacytoma in a cat, a tumor of plasma cells in the nasal cavity and frontal sinus. This condition can cause chronic nasal discharge and should be considered in feline upper respiratory tract disease diagnoses.

Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Medicine
  • Oncology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Sinonasal tumors are uncommon in cats.
  • Chronic nasal discharge can indicate various upper respiratory tract diseases.

Observation:

  • A 13-year-old cat presented with 18 months of right-sided mucopurulent nasal discharge.
  • Computed tomography revealed a mass in the right nasal cavity and frontal sinus.
  • Postmortem examination identified a whitish mass composed of well-differentiated plasma cells.

Findings:

  • Histopathology confirmed a mature-type sinonasal plasmacytoma, immunopositive for immunoglobulin G and lambda light chains.
  • Secondary Pasteurella infection caused concurrent mucopurulent rhinitis and sinusitis.
  • This is the first reported case of feline sinonasal plasmacytoma.

Implications:

  • Sinonasal plasmacytoma should be included in the differential diagnosis for feline upper respiratory tract tumors.
  • Early recognition and diagnosis are crucial for managing feline sinonasal diseases.
  • This case highlights the importance of comprehensive diagnostics in complex feline respiratory cases.
