Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Neurology
  • Clinical Assessment
  • Medical Statistics

Background:

  • Neurological assessment is critical for comatose children.
  • Standardized tools are needed to ensure reliable evaluations.
  • Previous studies have shown variability in neurological assessments.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate inter-observer agreement for twelve neurological assessment items.
  • To determine the reliability of specific assessment components.
  • To assess the consistency of neurological examinations in pediatric patients.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective data collection from fifteen comatose children.
  • Independent examination by two blinded observers.
  • Measurement of observer variability using Disagreement Rate and Kappa statistic.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Disagreement Rate ranged from 0.01 to 0.12 across all items.
  • Kappa statistic values generally aligned with Disagreement Rate findings.
  • Demonstrated fair to almost perfect inter-observer agreement for most items.

Conclusions:

  • The evaluated neurological assessment items show good reliability for comatose children.
  • These findings support the use of these specific items in clinical practice.
  • Consistent neurological assessments are achievable with the studied tools.
