Mirizzi syndrome (MS) is a rare obstructive jaundice caused by gallstones. Diagnosis and treatment of MS present significant challenges for medical professionals.
Area of Science:
- Gastroenterology
- Hepatobiliary Surgery
Background:
- Mirizzi syndrome (MS) is a rare condition causing obstructive jaundice due to gallstone impaction in the cystic duct or gallbladder.
- This can lead to stenosis of the extrahepatic bile duct and, in severe cases, cholecystocholedochal fistula formation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To analyze the prevalence, diagnosis, and management of Mirizzi syndrome.
- To highlight the diagnostic and therapeutic challenges associated with MS.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective review of 16 patients treated for MS between 1993 and 2005.
- Analysis of diagnostic methods including endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and surgical outcomes.
Main Results:
- MS prevalence was 0.35% of all cholecystectomies.
- Laparoscopic approach was converted to open surgery in 11 out of 14 patients.
- 15 patients were diagnosed intraoperatively, with 13 achieving stone extraction and obstruction relief.
Conclusions:
- Mirizzi syndrome poses significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges.
- Multidisciplinary approaches involving endoscopy and surgery are often required for successful management.
