Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory condition primarily affecting the colon and rectum. The primary drugs used in the treatment of ulcerative colitis are aminosalicylates. Summary

High-dose vitamin C (ascorbic acid) supplementation significantly improved anastomotic healing in rats by increasing collagen and enhancing tissue strength. Further research is needed to confirm clinical benefits.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of ascorbic acid supplementation on anastomotic healing after intestinal resection in rats.
  • To determine if varying doses of ascorbic acid influence healing parameters.

Main Methods:

  • Male Wistar albino rats underwent intestinal resection and were divided into three groups: sham, 100 mg/kg ascorbic acid, and 200 mg/kg ascorbic acid.
  • Ascorbic acid was administered intramuscularly daily.
  • Anastomotic bursting pressure, hydroxyproline levels, and histological analysis were performed on postoperative day 7.

Main Results:

  • Higher doses of ascorbic acid significantly increased anastomotic bursting pressure compared to the sham group.
  • Hydroxyproline levels, a marker of collagen, were significantly elevated in the high-dose ascorbic acid group.
