Arteries of the Head and Neck01:26

Arteries of the Head and Neck

The human body's intricate network of arteries ensures that every organ system receives the necessary oxygen and nutrients for optimal function. The arterial network in the head and neck region is particularly complex, providing vital blood flow to the brain, eyes, and other critical structures. Prominent arteries in this region include the internal carotid arteries and the vertebral arteries.
The internal carotid arteries supply blood to the anterior portion of the cerebrum. They enter the...

Atherosclerosis III: Management

Management of atherosclerosis involves an integrated strategy encompassing pharmacological treatment, surgical interventions, lifestyle changes, and nutrition therapy to address the multifactorial nature of the disease.Pharmacological TherapyA cornerstone of atherosclerosis management is the use of pharmacological agents. Statins, such as atorvastatin, are pivotal in inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase, an enzyme that catalyzes an initial step in cholesterol synthesis in the liver. This reduction in...

Ischemic Heart Disease: Overview

Ischemic heart disease occurs when the heart's blood supply dwindles, causing an ominous lack of oxygen and nutrients. This deficiency, stemming from reduced or obstructed blood flow, spells danger, leading to heart muscle damage and dysfunction.
Atherosclerosis, the primary malefactor, orchestrates this dangerous condition. It manifests as the accumulation of fatty deposits, akin to insidious plaques, within arterial walls. As time elapses, these plaques metamorphose, hardening and narrowing...

Coronary Artery Disease IV: Preventive Measures

Effective preventive measures for coronary artery disease (CAD) focus on controlling modifiable risk factors, including cholesterol abnormalities and lifestyle changes.Cholesterol ManagementFirst, the Mediterranean diet and the American Heart Association advocate for maintaining low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels below 100 mg/dL, with a more stringent recommendation of below 70 mg/dL for individuals at high risk. LDL cholesterol, often termed "bad cholesterol," can lead to the...

Coronary Artery Disease III: Clinical Manifestations

Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) is a primary health risk worldwide, leading to significant morbidity and mortality. The condition arises from the buildup of atherosclerotic plaques within the coronary arteries, resulting in diminished blood supply to the heart muscle. The clinical manifestations of CAD vary widely, from asymptomatic stages to severe, life-threatening conditions. Understanding these manifestations is crucial for early diagnosis and effective management.Angina Pectoris: The Warning...

Area of Science:

  • Vascular Medicine
  • Public Health
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Carotid stenosis is a significant, treatable cause of stroke.
  • Population studies indicate ethnic variations in carotid atherosclerosis prevalence.
  • This study aimed to investigate these ethnic differences at a multiethnic hospital.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To clarify ethnic differences in the prevalence and severity of carotid stenosis.
  • To compare the rates of significant carotid stenosis among Caucasian, Hispanic, Black, and Asian populations.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 1006 carotid artery ultrasounds over 4 years.
  • Patients classified into Caucasian, Hispanic, Black, and Asian ethnic groups.
  • Carotid stenosis severity categorized as mild, moderate, severe, critical, or total.

Main Results:

  • 20.5% of Caucasians had >59% stenosis vs. 10.1% of Hispanics, 8.7% of Blacks, 10.7% of Asians (P<0.001).
  • 9.2% of Caucasians had >79% stenosis vs. 4.3% of Hispanics, 2.9% of Blacks, 2.8% of Asians (P<0.001).
  • Caucasians and Blacks showed higher rates of cardiac disease, smoking, and alcohol abuse; Hispanics had higher diabetes rates.

Conclusions:

  • Significant ethnic variations in carotid stenosis severity were observed.
  • Caucasian patients demonstrated a statistically higher likelihood of severe or critical carotid stenosis.
  • Findings suggest implications for healthcare resource allocation given changing demographics.
