Brain imaging shows that potentially salvageable brain tissue after ischemic stroke can exist for up to 16 hours with positron-emission tomography (PET) scanning and up to 24 hours with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). These techniques help identify penumbra tissue that may be saved.
