Abstract:
This article describes the development of men's health services in Bradford and Airedale. In particular, it depicts a male-focused weight loss programme, which encourages men to adopt healthier lifestyles. The programme involved a six-week course with input from dietitians and exercise specialists. Upon completion, an evaluation questionnaire was completed by the participants. The aim was to establish independent and self-sustaining groups. The article also examines why excess weight is a specific health problem for men and highlights the use of health MOTs as a recruiting tool on to weight management programmes. Practical advice is included for any professional interested in developing a similar project. In 2005 the Health of Men (HoM) Weight Management Partnership received national recognition, winning a Queen's Nursing Institute Award for Innovative and Creative Practice.
