Area of Science:

  • Gynecologic Cytopathology
  • Cervical Cancer Screening

Background:

  • Conventional cytology methods for endocervical canal evaluation during colposcopy can be time-consuming.
  • There is a need for reliable alternative methods for cervical cytology preparation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the SurePath liquid-based preparation method as a substitute for conventional cytology.
  • To assess its validity for examining endocervical brush specimens during colposcopy.

Main Methods:

  • Paired SurePath liquid-based slides and conventional smears were prepared from endocervical brush specimens.
  • A split-sample protocol was used before biopsy during colposcopy.
  • Agreement, accuracy, and operating characteristics were assessed against histologic follow-up.

Main Results:

  • Excellent agreement was observed between SurePath and conventional smear cytology (kappa = 0.924).
  • Exact agreement in interpretation was achieved in 94.6% of cases.
  • SurePath and conventional smears agreed with histology in 47.8% and 49.2% of cases, respectively.

Conclusions:

  • The SurePath method is equivalent to conventional endocervical brush cytology.
  • It performs effectively in detecting cervical intraepithelial lesions and cancer.
  • SurePath is an acceptable substitute for conventional endocervical evaluation during colposcopy.
