Summary

Decompression retinopathy (DCR) can occur after intraocular surgery, especially in glaucoma patients with high intraocular pressure. Early vitrectomy may improve vision following this complication.

Diabetic Retinopathy

DefinitionDiabetic retinopathy is a microvascular complication of diabetes affecting the retinal blood vessels.Risk FactorsDiabetic retinopathy is present in almost all individuals with type 1 diabetes and more than 60% of those with type 2 diabetes after two decades of disease. The risk increases with poor glycemic control, hypertension, dyslipidemia, smoking, pregnancy, and puberty.Although cataracts and glaucoma are also more frequent in people with diabetes, retinopathy remains the leading...

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Retinal Diseases

Background:

  • Decompression retinopathy (DCR) is a rare complication following intraocular surgery.
  • High intraocular pressure (IOP) and glaucoma are potential risk factors.

Observation:

  • This case series reports 10 instances of DCR after various intraocular surgeries, including trabeculectomy and phacoemulsification.
  • Patients often had a history of glaucoma and elevated preoperative IOP despite medical management.

Findings:

  • Retinal hemorrhages, some with white centers, were observed in the posterior pole and periphery.
  • Visual acuity decreased significantly post-operatively, but improved after pars plana vitrectomy in 5 cases.

Implications:

  • Gradual IOP reduction during surgery may prevent DCR.

  • Early vitrectomy can be an effective treatment for DCR.
  • Glaucoma history is a significant risk factor for developing DCR.
