Summary

Hydroxyurea (HU) can cause painful leg ulcers in myeloproliferative disease patients. A novel dressing modulating matrix metalloproteinases offers a safe and effective treatment for these challenging wounds.

  • Two patients with HU-induced leg ulcers were treated.
  • A freeze-dried sponge containing oxidized regenerated cellulose and collagen was used.
  • This dressing physically entraps and inhibits proteases like plasmin and matrix metalloproteinases.

Findings:

  • Successful wound healing was observed in both patients.
  • The dressing effectively modulated protease activity.
  • This treatment was safe and well-tolerated.

Implications:

  • Topical matrix metalloproteinase modulators are a viable treatment for HU-induced leg ulcers.
  • This approach offers a new therapeutic strategy for recalcitrant wounds.
  • Further research may validate this treatment for similar dermatological complications.
