Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between serological markers of seven infections and body mass index (BMI).
  • To explore the synergistic effects of combined infections on BMI.
  • To examine the relationship between systemic inflammation markers and these associations.

Main Methods:

  • Population-based study of 985 individuals from Iceland, Sweden, and Estonia.
  • Measurement of IgG antibodies against Helicobacter pylori, hepatitis A virus, Toxoplasma gondii, herpes simplex virus 1, Chlamydia pneumoniae, Epstein-Barr virus, and cytomegalovirus.
  • Assessment of high-sensitive C-reactive protein (CRP) as a marker of systemic inflammation.

Main Results:

  • Significant positive associations were found between overweight (BMI ≥ 25 kg/m²) and IgG antibodies for Helicobacter pylori (OR 1.86) and Chlamydia pneumoniae (OR 1.39).
  • Combined seropositivity for these two infections showed a synergistic effect on overweight (OR 2.54).
  • CRP was positively related to BMI, but no significant association was found between CRP and IgG antibodies for Helicobacter pylori and/or Chlamydia pneumoniae.

Conclusions:

  • Infections with Chlamydia pneumoniae and Helicobacter pylori are significantly and synergistically associated with overweight.
  • This association is independent of systemic inflammation indicated by CRP levels.
  • Findings suggest specific microbial agents may play a role in human obesity.
