Background:

  • Periodontal disease is a common inflammatory condition affecting the gums and supporting structures of the teeth.
  • Melatonin, a hormone primarily known for regulating sleep-wake cycles, also possesses antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between periodontal disease and circulating melatonin levels.
  • To explore the relationship between melatonin levels and the severity of periodontal disease.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study involving 46 patients with periodontal disease and 26 healthy controls.
  • Assessment of periodontal status using the Community Periodontal Index.
  • Measurement of plasma and salivary melatonin levels via radioimmunoassay and analysis of lymphocyte subpopulations using flow cytometry.

Main Results:

  • Patients with periodontal disease exhibited significantly lower plasma and salivary melatonin levels compared to healthy controls.
  • A biphasic relationship was observed between plasma melatonin and periodontal disease severity.
  • Increased CD4+ T-cell counts correlated with worsening periodontal disease and altered melatonin levels.
