The Availability Heuristic01:08

The Availability Heuristic

A heuristic is a general problem-solving framework (Tversky & Kahneman, 1974). You can think of these as mental shortcuts that are used to solve problems. Different types of heuristics are used in different types of situations, and the impulse to use a heuristic occurs when one of five conditions is met (Pratkanis, 1989):

    Summary

Identifying drug-induced liver injury (DILI) cases using administrative databases is challenging. Current ICD-9-CM coding strategies are insufficient for DILI research, highlighting the need for dedicated networks like DILIN.

    Area of Science:

    • Hepatology
    • Pharmacovigilance
    • Clinical Informatics

    Background:

    • Drug-induced liver injury (DILI) presents diagnostic and research challenges.
    • Investigating DILI causality, risk factors, and mechanisms is crucial for drug safety.
    • Four drugs—phenytoin, isoniazid, amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, and valproic acid—are frequent DILI culprits.

    Discussion:

    • This study evaluated ICD-9-CM diagnostic database search strategies to identify DILI cases.
    • The most specific search yielded too few cases, while the most sensitive was too labor-intensive.
    • Administrative databases are inadequate for specific DILI research.

    Key Insights:

    • No ICD-9-CM search strategy effectively identified sufficient DILI cases for research.
    • The limitations underscore the inadequacy of administrative data for DILI research.

  • Dedicated research networks are essential for advancing DILI understanding.
  • Outlook:

    • Future DILI research requires robust data collection methods beyond administrative databases.
    • Support for initiatives like the Drug Induced Liver Injury Network (DILIN) is vital.
    • Further research is needed to improve DILI diagnosis and patient management.
