Hypersensitivity Reactions: Immune-Complex Reactions01:19

Hypersensitivity Reactions: Immune-Complex Reactions

Type III hypersensitivity reactions occur when antigen–antibody complexes form and activate the complement system. Normally, these complexes help the clearance of antigens by phagocytes and red blood cells. However, when large numbers of immune complexes are present, they can deposit in tissues—particularly in the walls of blood vessels—leading to inflammation and tissue injury. These deposits trigger complement activation and neutrophil recruitment, resulting in serum sickness, a systemic...

Nephrotic Syndrome I : Introduction

Nephrotic Syndrome is a chronic kidney disorder defined by clinical findings such as severe proteinuria, hypoalbuminemia, hyperlipidemia, and edema. These symptoms result from damage to the glomeruli, the kidney’s filtering units, increasing their permeability to proteins.Definition and Meaning:Proteinuria, defined as the loss of more than 3.5 grams of protein per day in adults, is a crucial feature of nephrotic syndrome. This condition is often accompanied by edema, the accumulation of fluid...
Synesthesia01:27

Synesthesia

Synesthesia is a remarkable condition where stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway. People with synesthesia experience a blending or crossing of their senses, such as sight and sound, leading to cross-modal sensations. In this condition, the stimulation of one sense, such as hearing a number or musical note, triggers an experience of another sense, like sensing a specific color, taste, or smell. People...
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum01:21

Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum

Smooth endoplasmic reticulum or smooth ER is a sub-organelle with specialized functions in animal cells and plant cells. It is often associated with the tubule morphology of the endoplasmic reticulum.
The ER provides optimal conditions for synthesizing steroid hormones and lipids, such as phospholipids and triglycerides. Traditionally, lipid metabolism was considered to be a smooth ER function. However, there is no direct evidence to prove that rough ER is completely excluded from lipid...
Autism Spectrum Disorder01:19

Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition marked by persistent deficits in social communication and interaction alongside restrictive and repetitive behaviors or interests. ASD is sometimes accompanied by intellectual impairment.
These core symptoms manifest differently among individuals, ranging from mild to severe. The disorder's complexity extends beyond its clinical presentation, encompassing a diverse range of biological, cognitive, and sociocultural influences.

    Summary

Melkersson-Rosenthal syndrome, a rare condition causing facial swelling and nerve issues, can present with varying symptoms. Early diagnosis and treatment with corticosteroids and other medications can lead to clinical improvement.

    Area of Science:

    • Neurology
    • Dermatology
    • Ophthalmology

    Background:

    • Melkersson-Rosenthal syndrome (MRS) is a rare neurological disorder characterized by facial edema, fissured tongue, and facial nerve paralysis.
    • Oligosymptomatic presentations are more common than the classic triad, complicating diagnosis.

    Observation:

    • The authors present two cases of MRS: one with the full triad and mild neurological symptoms, and another with lip edema and a fissured tongue.
    • Pathohistological examination of oral mucosa biopsies showed granulomatous lesions in one case and early-phase edema with inflammation in the other.

    Findings:

    • Allergic causes were excluded through extensive laboratory and clinical testing.
    • Histopathology revealed distinct phases of the syndrome, from early edema to advanced granulomatous changes.

    Implications:

    • This study highlights the diagnostic complexity of MRS, especially when differentiating from hereditary angioedema.
    • Effective management involves a combination of therapies including glucocorticoids, antihistamines, and anabolics, leading to clinical improvement.
