Background:

  • Partial tonsillectomy is a common procedure for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and snoring in children.
  • Radiofrequency (RF) is a frequently used energy source for tonsillotomy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the regrowth potential of tonsils after partial tonsillectomy performed with radiofrequency.
  • To assess the recurrence of obstructive symptoms following RF partial tonsillectomy.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 42 children (1-10 years old) who underwent RF partial tonsillectomy.
  • Evaluation of follow-up data for tonsil regrowth and symptom recurrence.

Main Results:

  • Tonsil regrowth was observed in 7 out of 42 patients (16.6%).
  • Recurrence of upper respiratory tract obstruction symptoms occurred in 5 of the 7 patients with regrowth.
  • Symptomatic regrowth necessitated complete tonsillectomy in affected children.

Conclusions:

  • Partial tonsillectomy via radiofrequency carries a notable risk of tonsil regrowth and symptom recurrence.
  • The underlying mechanism for regrowth remains unclear.
  • Surgeons must counsel families on the possibility of regrowth and informed consent is crucial before RF tonsillotomy.
