Summary

Sleep-disordered breathing is common in older adults, with significant prevalence of apnea index (AI) and respiratory disturbance index (RDI) events. Predictors like obesity and daytime sleepiness were identified, but prediction accuracy remained low.

Area of Science:

  • Gerontology
  • Sleep Medicine
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) is a prevalent condition in the elderly population.
  • Objective and subjective data are crucial for understanding SDB prevalence and correlates.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of SDB in a large, randomly selected elderly sample.
  • To identify correlates and predictors of SDB in older adults.

Main Methods:

  • A random sample of 427 elderly individuals (≥65 years) in San Diego, California, was surveyed.
  • Objective (apnea index, AI) and subjective data were collected.
  • Statistical analysis identified correlates and predictors of SDB.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • 24% of participants had an AI ≥ 5, and 62% had an RDI ≥ 10.
  • Correlates included high relative weight, snoring, nocturnal breathing cessation, confusion, daytime sleepiness, and depression.
  • Predictors included body mass index, falling asleep inappropriately, male gender, avoiding alcohol before bed, and napping.

Conclusions:

  • SDB is highly prevalent in the elderly, with significant numbers experiencing abnormal AI and RDI.
  • While several factors are associated with SDB, their predictive power for AI or RDI is limited.
  • Demographic variables and symptoms alone do not allow for highly reliable prediction of SDB severity.
