These paired structures are situated within the pelvic region and are anchored by the mesovarium—a peritoneal extension that also connects them to the wider structure of the broad ligament. Background:

  • Follicular cysts are uncommon in horses, particularly in young animals.
  • Congenital conditions affecting the skin require thorough investigation for accurate diagnosis and management.

Observation:

  • A 4-year-old Spanish purebred stallion presented with multiple, firm, well-circumscribed, nonpruritic nodules (0.5-3 cm) distributed across all body regions.
  • Lesions developed over two years, were not present at birth, and showed slow growth without a history of trauma.

Findings:

  • Histopathological examination of excised nodules revealed simple epidermal cysts (infundibular and isthmus-catagen types).
  • These cysts were characterized by squamous epithelium and a central keratin-filled cavity.

Implications:

  • This case represents the first documented instance of multiple follicular cysts in a young Spanish purebred horse.
  • The congenital nature suggests a potential genetic predisposition or developmental anomaly, warranting further research into equine skin cyst etiology.
