Abstract:
This case study on biomedical knowledge production investigates the notion of environment, genes and gender and their productivity in the field of environmental health. Asking for the relations between genomics and risk factor epidemiology, II follow the circulation of the categories 'gender'/'sex' and 'ethnicity'/'race' in the emerging field of 'environmental genomics'. Can the inclusion of gender challenge biomedicine or does biomedicine consolidate biological concepts of 'sex'? II will argue that these 'population categories' are reconfigured in the process of epidemiological investigations into causal determinants of disease. Environmental health research is examined as one of the sites where these biosocial negotiations of body concepts occur in a co-production between genomic data and contextual inscriptions.
