Surveys

Often, psychologists develop surveys as a means of gathering data. Surveys are lists of questions to be answered by research participants, and can be delivered as paper-and-pencil questionnaires, administered electronically, or conducted verbally. Generally, the survey itself can be completed in a short time, and the ease of administering a survey makes it easy to collect data from a large number of people.

Background:

  • Understanding physical activity (PA) correlates in adolescents is crucial for developing effective health interventions.
  • Accurate measurement of physical activity and its correlates is essential for research and clinical practice.
  • Parental reporting is a potential source of information, but its validity compared to student self-reporting requires investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess agreement between adolescent students and their parents on physical activity correlates.
  • To examine the relationship between physical activity correlates and objective measures of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA).
  • To compare the utility of parent versus student reports in relation to objective physical activity data.

Main Methods:

  • Equivalent questionnaires were administered to 531 students (46% male, 78% white) and their parents.
  • Agreement between student and parent responses for hypothesized physical activity correlates was calculated.
  • Spearman correlations were used to assess relationships between correlates and objective moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) in a subset of 177 students.

Main Results:

  • Student-parent agreement on physical activity correlates ranged from r = .34 to .64.
  • Correlations between MVPA and correlates showed similar patterns for student and parent reports (range -.04 to .21 for students, -.14 to .32 for parents).
  • No statistically significant differences were found between parent and student reports for 8 out of 9 correlations examined.

Conclusions:

  • Parental reports demonstrate moderate agreement with adolescent self-reports on physical activity correlates.
  • Parental data on physical activity correlates are comparable to student self-reports when related to objective physical activity measures.
  • Parents can offer valuable insights into physical activity correlates for students in Grades 7-12, supporting public health and pediatric research.
