Summary

Laparoscopic ventral hernia repair using W3 mesh and Protack fixation led to severe adhesions and recurrent hernias in four patients. These findings question the safety and validation of current materials for laparoscopic ventral hernia repair.

Background:

  • Laparoscopic ventral hernia repair (LVH) is a common surgical procedure.
  • W3 mesh and Protack fixation devices are utilized in LVH.
  • Assessing the long-term safety and efficacy of surgical materials is crucial.

Observation:

  • Four patients undergoing LVH with W3 mesh and Protack fixation were reoperated laparoscopically.
  • Reoperations occurred between 5 and 23 months post-initial surgery.
  • Reasons for reoperation included recurrent hernia and new hernias proximal to the mesh.

Findings:

  • All reoperated patients exhibited adhesions involving the mesh and fixation devices.
  • Adhesion severity and extent increased over time.
