Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MeDi) and the risk of essential tremor (ET).
  • To determine if adherence to the MeDi is a significant predictor of ET in a case-control study.
  • To explore potential dose-response relationships between MeDi adherence and ET risk.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study was conducted in the New York Tri-State area to examine the environmental epidemiology of ET.
  • Adherence to the MeDi was assessed using a food frequency questionnaire.

  • A dose-response relationship was observed, with individuals in the highest MeDi adherence tertile showing substantially reduced ET odds (OR = 0.29, 95% CI: 0.10-0.82, p for trend = 0.021) compared to the lowest tertile.

Conclusions:

  • Essential tremor (ET) cases demonstrated less adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MeDi) compared to controls.
  • The findings suggest a potential dose-response protective effect of the Mediterranean diet (MeDi) against essential tremor (ET).
  • Further research is warranted to elucidate the underlying biological mechanisms connecting MeDi adherence and ET risk.
