Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the hypothesis that trauma and PTSD precede the onset of OCD.
  • To determine if there is a significant association between traumatization, PTSD, and OCD.

Main Methods:

  • A comparative study involving 210 individuals diagnosed with OCD and 133 matched controls from the general population.
  • Data collected from the German Family Study on OCD (GENOS) using direct interviews with the German version of the Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia - Lifetime Version for Anxiety Disorders (DSM-IV).

Main Results:

  • No significant differences in the lifetime prevalence rates of traumatization, PTSD, or acute stress disorder were found between OCD cases and controls.
  • Severe traumatization was reported in 6.2% of OCD cases and 8.3% of controls.

  • The findings suggest that factors other than severe traumatic events are primary determinants for the onset of OCD in most individuals.
  • The low incidence of trauma-related disorders preceding or coinciding with OCD onset supports this conclusion.
