Sarcoidosis can cause chronic kidney disease (CKD), particularly tubulo-interstitial nephritis (TIN). Corticosteroid treatment showed effectiveness in improving renal function for many patients with sarcoidosis-related kidney issues.
Area of Science:
- Nephrology
- Immunology
- Systemic Diseases
Background:
- Sarcoidosis is a systemic granulomatous disease.
- Renal involvement in sarcoidosis is uncommon, with chronic kidney disease (CKD) affecting less than 1% of patients.
- Tubulo-interstitial nephritis (TIN) is the most frequent renal manifestation, occurring in 7-27% of sarcoidosis cases.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the clinical characteristics, renal involvement, and treatment outcomes in patients with sarcoidosis-related kidney disease.
- To evaluate the efficacy of corticosteroid therapy in managing renal manifestations of sarcoidosis.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective study of 15 patients diagnosed with sarcoidosis-related renal disease between 1975 and 2006.
- Analysis of patient demographics, clinical presentation, renal biopsy findings, treatment regimens, and patient outcomes.
- Follow-up data collected for a mean period of 25 months.
Main Results:
- The study included 13 females and 2 males with a mean age of 56.5 years.
- CKD was present in 93.3% of patients, with proteinuria in 96.6%.
- Renal biopsies revealed TIN in 10 patients, while 2 patients had glomerulonephritis (GN). Corticosteroid therapy was administered to 80% of patients, showing favorable outcomes in 46.6% who improved renal function.
Conclusions:
- Corticosteroid treatment is effective for TIN in sarcoidosis patients.
- Sarcoidosis can lead to significant renal failure, highlighting its importance as a nephrological condition.
- Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for managing kidney involvement in sarcoidosis.

Glomerulus: Structure and Function
The glomerulus is a tiny, intricate network of capillaries located at the beginning of the nephron. It's enveloped by the Bowman's capsule and receives its blood supply from an afferent arteriole, which divides into numerous capillaries...
