Summary

Carious dentin, even after treatment, shows very low permeability. Excavation did not change permeability, but removing the smear layer significantly increased it in carious and normal dentin.

  • Carious lesions had slight permeability (2.3% of controls), unchanged after excavation.
  • Smear layer removal in carious dentin increased permeability to 6.9%.
  • Normal dentin cavity preparation slightly increased permeability; smear layer removal increased it by 91%.

Conclusions:

  • Confirms qualitative findings of very low permeability in carious dentin.
  • Smear layer significantly impacts dentin permeability in both carious and normal states.
  • Carious dentin remains significantly less permeable than normal dentin even after smear layer removal.
