Summary

Pneumatosis coli, a rare condition causing colorectal disease in dogs, can be effectively treated with a low-residue diet and metronidazole. This diagnosis should be considered in dogs presenting with chronic gastrointestinal signs.

  • Concurrent hyperadrenocorticism was suspected based on clinical presentation.

Findings:

  • The canine patient was diagnosed with pneumatosis coli.
  • Clinical signs of colorectal disease resolved rapidly within 2 days.
  • Treatment involved a low-residue diet and oral metronidazole.

Implications:

  • Pneumatosis coli should be included in the differential diagnosis for dogs with colorectal disease.
  • Early diagnosis and appropriate management, including diet and medication, can lead to rapid resolution of clinical signs.
  • This case highlights the importance of considering rare conditions in the diagnostic workup of complex gastrointestinal presentations in dogs.
