Young Indians in North India exhibit distinct blood pressure (BP) patterns compared to their Southern counterparts. Regional variations in systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP/DBP) highlight the importance of geographic factors in pediatric BP assessment.
Area of Science:
- Cardiology
- Public Health
- Pediatrics
Background:
- Blood pressure (BP) variations exist across different populations.
- Understanding regional BP differences in young individuals is crucial for health assessment.
Purpose of the Study:
- To compare blood pressure (BP) levels in North Indian and South Indian children and adolescents.
- To identify age-specific and sex-specific regional differences in BP.
Main Methods:
- Age, height, and sex-specific BP were estimated for 6,320 North Indian subjects aged 7-18 years.
- BP values were compared with those of South Indian subjects.
Main Results:
- Between 7-12 years, North Indian children had lower diastolic BP (DBP) but similar systolic BP (SBP) compared to South Indians.
- Between 13-18 years, North Indian adolescents showed significantly higher SBP with no significant difference in DBP.
- Significant regional disparities in BP distribution were observed.
Conclusions:
- Geographic location plays a significant role in BP distribution among young Indians.
- Evaluating blood pressure in Indian youth should consider regional population differences.

Blood Pressure
The average BP in an adult is typically around 120/80 mmHg (millimeters of mercury). In this measurement, the numerator (120) indicates the systolic pressure, which is the pressure in the arteries during the contraction of the heart's ventricles as blood is expelled. The denominator (80) represents the...

Hypertension (High blood pressure)
Hypertension occurs when blood pressure readings consistently exceed the normal range. It is diagnosed when systolic blood pressure (the top number, indicating pressure while the heart...
